Power of Words
The Power of Words
Proverbs 18:21 KJV – Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
I can see it on his face. As I speak to him it becomes more obvious – the averted look, the downcast eyes, the subdued demeanor and the tentative response – he is still hurting; most likely dealing with humiliation, anger and distrust. We speak briefly. Then, without saying another word, without a backward glance, he walks away. Why did I say those things? Why did I allow my anger to cause me to lose control? My words were hurtful and cut deep. It happened a while ago and I was convicted to make amends, and I did. But it’s still there. I can see it. I can sense it. And it’s up to me, by God’s grace, to fix it! Never again will I be the cause of such needless pain.
I can see it on her face. As I speak to her it becomes more obvious – the awakened spirit, the growing confidence, the brightening of the eyes, the liveliness in her voice – her creativity and enthusiasm has been awakened! This is utterly amazing! Having a simple conversation – interspersing words of encouragement and asking thoughtful open-ended questions – led to the most incredible transformation in her demeanor! After we concluded our conversation she gently pushed her chair out from the table, stood up and with the biggest smile you could imagine, made her way across the room to the door with a lightness of step that was not there before. Unbelievable.
Words are powerful. Words carry weight. Words can cut like a dagger or heal like a soothing balm. Words affect people in ways we do not fully comprehend. This is why we are admonished to take great care in the way in which we utilize them. The manner in which we choose to use our words when relating to others is an issue of such monumental importance that Jesus Himself felt the need to issue to us a very stern warning. The way in which we use our words have eternal consequences:
Matthew 12:35 – But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
I have learned through painful experience, the guilt and pain of hurting others with my words; but I have also experienced the joy and fulfillment that comes with speaking words of encouragement to others that calm the mind and uplift the spirit. Causing others needless pain through the mindless misuse of the power of our words is not in the will of God. Let us be encouraged to choose the path of uplifting our brothers and sisters in Christ, and in the world, by the mindful, thoughtful, kind, intentionally constructive use of our words. You never know the impact that you may have on a soul that is precious and dear to the heart of our Heavenly Father.
